Zanthoxylum clava-herculis
A tough native small tree with glossy compound leaves, corky thorn-studded bark and clusters of small greenish flowers in spring. Its leaves and bark make your mouth tingle, which earned it the nickname toothache tree. A conversation piece for native and wildlife gardens, and a host plant for giant swallowtail butterflies.
- Full sun to part shade
- Native, drought tolerant and butterfly friendly
- Grows about 15–20 ft tall and 10–15 ft wide
Care: Water regularly the first summer, then only during long dry spells. Fully cold hardy in North Texas; plant away from walkways because of the thorns.
