Diospyros virginiana
American persimmon is a native tree with glossy leaves, distinctive blocky bark and small orange fruit that turns sweet and soft when fully ripe in fall. Its yellow-to-orange fall color and wildlife value make it a fine choice for a naturalized or edible landscape.
- Full sun to part shade
- Sweet orange fruit in fall when fully ripe
- Grows about 20–35 ft tall and 15–25 ft wide
- Native; very adaptable to heat and clay
Care: Water deeply the first year; afterwards it is quite drought tolerant. Most trees are male or female, so plant more than one for reliable fruit. Fully cold hardy in North Texas.
