Sambucus canadensis cultivars
A fast-growing native shrub with lacy, flat clusters of creamy white flowers in late spring followed by heavy bunches of dark purple berries. Gardeners grow it for syrups, jams and wine, and it also feeds birds and pollinators along fence lines or in naturalized areas.
- Full sun to part shade
- Edible berries when cooked; attracts wildlife
- Grows about 6–10 ft tall and wide
- Varieties: Ozark, Johns
Care: Keep moist in summer, as it likes regular water. Prune out old canes in late winter to keep it productive; very cold hardy in North Texas.
