Quercus palustris
Pin oak is a stately shade tree with a pyramidal shape when young, glossy, deeply cut leaves, and russet to red fall color. It grows faster than many oaks and makes a handsome lawn tree.
- Full sun
- Red to bronze fall color
- Grows about 50–70 ft tall and 30–40 ft wide
- Tolerates wet, poorly drained soil
Care: Water deeply through the first two summers. Pin oak prefers acidic soil and can yellow (iron chlorosis) in alkaline North Texas clay, so it does best in amended or more acidic sites. Fully cold hardy.
