Citrus unshiu cultivars
Satsumas are the most cold-tolerant sweet citrus, with glossy evergreen leaves, fragrant spring flowers and easy-peel, seedless mandarins that ripen from October into December. They are a favorite for patio containers and protected sunny spots in North Texas.
- Full sun
- Seedless, easy-peel fall fruit
- Grows about 6–10 ft tall; smaller in a container
- Self-fruitful
- Varieties: Brown Select, Frost, Bumper
Care: Water deeply when the top of the soil dries and feed with citrus fertilizer in spring and summer. Established trees handle brief dips into the mid-20s °F; cover or move containers inside during hard freezes.
